Ms. Mandy -- middle toddler teacherWhat do you like most about working with children?More often than not, many teachers will tell you they enjoy working with children to watch them grow and learn. What I like most is being able to become a positive impact in the children’s lives. Everyday is a new day working with young children, and no two days are ever the same. Children come in with new stories and new interests. I love hearing about their interests, because this gives me as a teacher, new ideas on how to take their interests and apply them to the Ohio Department of Education Early Learning Content Standards. Children learn best when they are interested in the subject and when they are able to explore the subject on their own terms. As a teacher, I enjoy the new challenges this brings to helping young children achieve the skills they need to learn. What makes Rockport Early Childhood Center special for children? Rockport Early Childhood Center is a well organized, nurturing center for children. It has achieved a One Star Rating with Step-Up-To-Quality. They strive to maintain the low teacher-to-children ratios. By having such low ratios, this allows teachers to give more individualized attention to all children. Our teachers also write daily report cards for parents to communicate what their child has learned, what they have eaten, and how their behaviors were for the day. Report cards are a great way for teachers to communicate to the parents when simply talking to each other in the room is not possible during pick-up and drop-off. Transitions can be especially difficult for children and families, and Rockport takes this to heart. They have orientation days for new families, a transition period for “move-up” children, and goodbye gifts and parties for families that leave the Rockport family for one reason or another. Orientation days for new children allow the parent or guardian to spend the day with their child in their new classroom. This helps the child feel safe in their new surroundings. The transition between classrooms lasts over a one week period. At the beginning of the week, children visit for just a couple of hours in the morning. In the middle of the week, they are eating lunch and napping in their new rooms. And by the last day of the week, they spend a full day in their new classroom. This transition allows students to get to know their new teachers, classmates, and their new physical environment. When families have to leave the Rockport family for one reason or another, Rockport helps the family transition by making photo albums of the children from their very first days to their last days at Rockport. We often have goodbye parties and make goodbye gifts to help families leave our family and begin anew. What do you like most about working at Rockport Early Childhood Center? Rockport Early Childhood Center values the strengths of each individual teacher, and they make every effort to increase our teaching skills by sending us to specific trainings. Many of our teachers have Early Childhood Education backgrounds. Not only are we sent to trainings, but some, myself included, have an Associate’s Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education, and others are currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Education. Rockport also has specific staff members who are substitutes for the center. Some substitutes are here full time, allowing classroom teachers to have plan time and breaks outside of the classroom. Others are called upon when classroom teachers are out for one reason or another. Having multiple substitute teachers allows Rockport to remain in operation when classroom teachers are out. Unfortunately, there are many centers out there who have to close for the day if they do not have enough teachers to cover all of the classrooms. Rockport has been organized and works very hard to maintain a fully staffed center so that the families of Rockport are never inconvenienced. The classroom teachers are also very well organized by having weekly lesson plans posted in the room and having materials ready so that if they are going to be out, a substitute can come in and still teach the day’s lessons and activities. Daily schedules are posted in the classroom, making it easy for parents and other staff members to know what each classroom is doing at what time.
